Risks Associated with Taking a Pill while Pregnant

A fair share of risks and benefits may be found in any medication; the variations stand different from person to person. For instance, during pregnancy, women are at the most sensitive when it comes to the effects of medicines. Extra care in the approval and labeling of medications is being taken by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because most pharmaceutical companies present their medications as safe for women with a baby on the way. Most women would try alternative therapies that would not put their baby in harm’s way. Magnetic therapy for depression is one of those alternative treatments that have caught the public’s interest.

Women are more prone to varying shifts of moods that may make them avoid doing their usual daily activities, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) says. It is also true among pregnant women that they too are subject to developing signs of melancholia during or after pregnancy. Thedepression may be too hard to bear that most women would have decided to take antidepressants at the full length of pregnancy. The associated risks of medications for stabilizing the moods are often centered to the fetus when it is taken during pregnancy. All medications are categorized by the FDA, depending on the risks that the fetus are exposed to.

The leading antidepressants now used in the market are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which affect the serotonin levels of the brain and maintain the well-being of the person to whom they are prescribed. SSRIs are often used or prescribed to pregnant women because they were believed to be much safer than earlier medications used for depression. Recent studies have led researchers to believe that there are still some areas regarding the effects of SSRIs that need to be investigated. Before filling-up the prescription, attending physicians discuss the risks associated with the drug. Every now and then the risks overshadows the benefits.

The side effects of medications may be seen immediately after delivery or will become more prominent as the baby grows older.  The FDA is firm in making decisions when it comes to evaluating how the drug affects the baby. Babies are prone to develop heart and lung problems when their mother uses SSRIs in the duration of the pregnancy. Common problems with the heart are holes and malformations. Certain lung problems such as persistent pulmonary hypertension are seen among newborns. Zoloft birth defects keep women vigilant when they are using Zoloft.
